It’s certainly feeling a lot chillier in Sidcup this week! With some proper cold weather finally arriving in London, we’re sharing some simple tips for keeping your home cosy, and your heating bills down, during a cold snap.
Keep the heat in
Simple actions like closing your curtains at dusk, or during colder weather, can make a huge difference to how well the rooms of your home hold their temperature. Seems obvious, but it’s amazing how often you’ll see homes with blinds or curtains wide open on chilly evenings.
Likewise, consider draught excluders across doors, and other draught-proofing measures for windows and loft hatches. Look for the spots around your home where the cold can get in, and the heat you’re paying for can get out!
Wrap up warm
(We don’t mean your woolly hat and scarf, although they’ll come in handy too!) Proper insulation for your pipes, boiler, water tank, loft and walls, makes a huge difference to keeping your home warm and keeping your energy bills in check.
The Energy Saving Trust has some great suggestions for insulating and draught-proofing your home. Read it on their site.
Treat your boiler to some TLC
Are you reluctant to turn up your thermostat during colder weather, for fear of hurting your pocket? Making sure your boiler is running efficiently will help take the pressure off.
Here at XP Plumbing and Heating in Sidcup, we offer a comprehensive boiler health check by one of our experienced plumbers and heating engineers. Think of it as an investment in your future cosiness, as well as your pocket!
Be prepared – just in case…
Freezing conditions greatly increase the risk of leaks from split or burst pipes, and if that happens, you’ll want to be able to cut your water supply at source as quickly as possible.
Make sure you any the rest of your family know where your home’s stopcock is in advance of any very cold weather. And if you already knew where your stopcock is, check it’s still in good working order.
Don’t wait until you really need it to discover it’s seized up!
