This week is Gas Safety Week in the UK, an annual event co-ordinated by the Gas Safe Register, to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of taking care of your gas appliances.
Gas is common in homes across Sidcup and the surrounding areas. Whether you’re the owner of a gas boiler, gas cooker, or gas heating in Sidcup, gas is great but needs to be respected and well maintained, or it can be deadly.
To do our bit for Gas Safety Week, we’re sharing some simple, solid advice on how to keep yourself safe, and keep your appliances running efficiently and trouble-free, if you have gas at home.
Get the work done by an expert
Us Brits love a bit of DIY, and that’s just as true in Sidcup. But even if you’re a keen ‘DIYer’, always leave gas installation and gas repairs to the experts. It’s just not worth the risk. Always use a Gas Safe registered engineer like XP Plumbing and Heating to fit, inspect or repair your gas appliances.
To work legally on your gas appliances and installations, the engineer must be on the Gas Safe Register. Accept no excuses and no alternatives. If you’re in doubt, ask to see their Gas Safe ID card. If they’re registered, they’ll have one. It’s a photo ID on the front, and a list of what they’re qualified to do on the reverse.
You can also check whether an engineer is registered via Gas Safe’s website or their telephone helpline. Check their site for more details.
XP and our gas engineers are of course registered. (Our registration number is 539196, if you want to check for yourself.)
Learn the gas danger signs
Get to know, and look out for, the tell-tale signs of a faulty gas appliance:
- appliance not working correctly
- the flame is a lazy yellow, rather than a crisp blue
- black marks or stains around the appliance
- pilot light keeps going out
- increased condensation in the room
And even if it appears to be running correctly, get your gas boiler, cooker, fire and any other gas appliances serviced annually by a Gas Safe registered expert like XP Plumbing and Heating.
If in doubt, call us out!
The Gas Safe Register recommends getting carbon monoxide detectors fitted for your gas appliances. Like a smoke alarm, it’ll alert you if this deadly gas is present in your home. You can find more information on the Gas Safe Register’s website.
