It’s been hard to tell this year, but we’re pretty sure the winter is behind us now. If you’re doing some spring cleaning this month, in anticipation of better weather, we recommend including some easy maintenance of your plumbing, heating and drainage systems.
Your boiler, radiators, drains, and gutters have been working hard for you over the winter months. A little elbow grease at this time of year will return the favour, making sure they stay in peak condition, whatever the changeable London weather throws at your home!
Check your gutters
There’s a good reason that parts of London like Sidcup, Bexley and Bromley are called the leafy suburbs!
With so many trees around in our part of London, it’s possible a lot of leaves and other detritus has found its way into your gutters and drains during autumn and winter, potentially causing blockages and drainage problems.
Adjust your dials
Check the settings on your hot water heater, radiators and similar. If you’ve still got your thermostats turned up to max for the winter (let’s face it, there’s been precious little reason to turn them down again recently!) you’ll be wasting energy and money in the milder spring weather. It’s said that if you turn your thermostat down by just one degree, you could save ten percent on your energy bills!
Did you notice cold spots on some of your radiators over the winter? Or maybe one radiator in the house seemed not to be pulling its weight, leaving you with one chilly room no one wanted to be in?
If your radiator isn’t heating up as well as it should, it might just need ‘bleeding’. (That’s not as gruesome as it sounds!)
A common cause of a radiator running inefficiently is a build-up of trapped air inside, which hinders the flow of hot water through it. Letting that trapped air escape by ‘bleeding’ your radiator will help get it back to its best.
Pamper your boiler
Your boiler worked hard for you during the tough winter months. Why not treat it to some TLC now the weather’s a little better?
